Project Red is a modernist replacement dwelling and separate studio, created on the footprint of an existing property and outbuildings in Buckinghamshire. Working as principal contractor for this new build alongside Lee + Wilkinson Architecture and landscape architect Ian Kitson, Barr Group demolished the original structures and delivered a new, highly energy-efficient residence that feels rooted in its Chilterns setting.
The main house is formed of a flint-clad ground floor and oak-framed upper storey, wrapped in shou sugi ban cladding. A sedum roof blankets much of both the dwelling and studio, helping the buildings recede into the hillside and providing an additional layer of insulation. Externally, Corten steel retaining walls, stone paths and naturalistic planting create sweeping curves that contrast with the crisp, modular architecture.
Inside, a sequence of interconnected spaces flows from entrance to living, kitchen and studio, with large expanses of glazing framing views of the surrounding landscape. Bespoke cabinetry by Barr Kitchens and Barr Joinery, combined with considered apertures and oak framing, ensures that light, texture and craftsmanship are present in every room.
